Abstract

The profession of pharmacy is in a period of rapid change and faces numerous challenges. To meet these challenges, the profession will need skilled leaders. A community pharmacy residency program may be one way to train such individuals, and the objective of this study was to determine the need for and interest in such a program, as well as determine some of the program's basic characteristics and components. A questionnaire was mailed to all pharmacists in the Maritime provinces and administered to the third- and fourth-year pharmacy students at the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy. Six hundred and seventy-four of 1,372 (49.1%) surveys were returned. Of these, 440 (65.3%) believe there is a need for advanced post graduate training in the form of a community pharmacy residency program. Respondents also gave their opinions on the optimal rotation sites, salary, length, education components, and program value. This survey demonstrates the support among pharmacists and pharmacy students in the Maritime provinces for a community pharmacy residency program. The results are being used to develop a program for the Maritime provinces.
