The immune system is a complex network of protection, offense, and defense. This article describes immune system physiology, the pathophysiology hypersensitive immune response and autoimmune disease, and current trends in immunology. It also reviews recent studies of predictors of infection in trauma patients and of mortality in patients presenting to the emergency department with indications of infection.
