Abstract

Dermoscopy (also known as epiluminescence microscopy, dermatoscopy, amplified surface microscopy) is an in-vivo method that has been reported to be a useful tool for the early recognition of melanoma and the differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the skin [1, 2]. Its use increases diagnostic accuracy between 5 and 30% over clinical visual inspection, depending on the type of skin lesion and the experience of the physician. This was confirmed by two recent evidence-based publications from a meta-analysis of the literature [3].
