Abstract

This chapter describes a convenient procedure for the preparation of heptacarbonyldisulfidodimanganese, Mn2(CO)7(μ-S2), from the acetonitrile derivative of Mn2(CO)10 and the strained cyclic thioether known as thiirane (SCH2CH2), which serves as a source of sulfur. Thiirane (ethylene sulfide) can be purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company and should be vacuum distilled before use. The Mn2(CO)9(NCMe) is readily prepared by treatment of Mn2(CO)10 with trimethylamine N-oxide in acetonitrile. The chapter discusses the procedures and properties of heptacarbonyldisulfidodimanganese.
