Abstract
Prior to the mid-1930s, Egypt's political leaders did not identify Egyptian with Arab nationalism and even, at times, spoke disparagingly of the importance of the Arab countries. Attempts to explain how Nasser came to symbolise pan-Arabism and Arab independence by focusing on Nasser's personality and philosophy, as well as the character of Egyptian nationalism. -M.Amos
