Abstract

Extensive laboratory and clinical research on implant materials and design, surgical procedures, biomechanics, surrounding bone tissue, and other aspects have led to new treatment concepts and approaches. While staging of implant therapy is a highly predictable option, extraction of remaining teeth and roots, simultaneous or delayed implant placement, and immediate provisionalization are protocols that are increasingly performed with success. The purpose of this article is to present the surgical and prosthodontic rationale for immediate loading in edentulous cases. A protocol for immediate loading of implants is described that allows patients to receive a fixed implant-supported prosthesis shortly after fixture insertion. Adequate diagnostics and pre-surgical treatment planning reduce treatment time and successfully restore the patient's oral function, phonetics, and esthetics.
