Abstract

This paper deals with the relationship between structural, thermal, and optical properties of aluminophosphate glasses doped with Ag2O alongside stoichiometric amounts of reducing agent SnO. The glasses prepared by the melt-quenching technique were studied by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. A strong correlation has been revealed between the 31P NMR spectral band width, which decreases with the increase in dopants concentration up to 8 mol%. Similarly, the glass transition temperature, Tg, decreases with the increase in the Ag2O and SnO concentration. Data indicate a major influence of the Ag2O dopant on these trends. Real-time optical absorption results are presented on the thermally-induced plasmonic development of Ag nanoparticles in glass containing 6 mol% Ag2O and SnO. The impact of the structural and thermal properties on the choice of processing temperatures towards producing Ag nanocomposites of interest to photonic applications is discussed.
