Label-free ferrohydrodynamic cell separation of circulating tumor cells

Abstract

We report a label-free ferrohydrodynamic cell separation (FCS) technology that is capable of high-throughput (6 mL/h), high recovery rate (92.9%), and biocompatible enrichment of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood, by systematically investigating the device operating parameters. We show cancer cells have excellent short-term viability, unaffected biomarker expressions, and ability to proliferate to confluence after FCS process. We apply FCS to successfully enrich CTCs from blood of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.
